Background knowledge
In addition to its historical significance, Schillerplatz is also an important transport hub and a cultural center with numerous cafés, restaurants and events. Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, the square is transformed into a colorful weekly market offering regional specialties.
A special symbol of the connection between Schiller and Dresden is the Schiller lime tree, which was planted on November 10, 2009 on the occasion of the 250th birthday of Friedrich Schiller was inaugurated on the square. It commemorates his literary legacy and his timeless ideals of freedom, humanity and community.
The painter Woldemar Hottenroth (1802-1894) is also closely associated with Schillerplatz. He was born in the immediate vicinity, at Schillerplatz 10, and spent his early childhood there. He later developed into an important representative of Dresden’s late Romanticism, whose works are still preserved today in the Städtische Galerie.
Today, Schillerplatz is characterized not only by its history and culture, but also by its immediate surroundings: connected to the Loschwitz district opposite by the famous “Blue Wonder”, the square is located in the middle of one of Dresden’s most characterful districts, which is characterized by Art Nouveau villas, the Elbe and historic architecture.
